Own a Piece of History: 1889 Indian Head Cent
This magnificent 1889 Indian Head Cent is a true collector’s item, showcasing the iconic design of Liberty with an Indian headdress. Struck from 1859-1864, these copper-nickel coins feature a captivating design evolution, with changes to the reverse wreath and a sharper Indian portrait near the end of the series. Note that the design depicts Liberty and not an actual Native American.

Collector’s Note: The reverse of first-year coins featured a laurel wreath, which changed in 1860 to an oak wreath and small shield. A slightly sharper Indian portrait was created near the end of 1864 and included designer James B. Longacre’s initial L on the lower ribbon behind the neck. Indian Heads were struck in bronze through the end of the series in 1909.
